Since 1912, a suspension bridge has spanned the Wainuiomata River near the Mackay Cottage site.
The current suspension bridge, constructed in 2022, replaced an earlier suspension bridge located nearby. The earlier bridge, built by Scott Farrell, was eventually demolished in late May 2024. Prior to this, a bridge constructed in the 1980s stood next to the ford, replacing a simpler suspension bridge built in 1912, which was situated roughly 100 metres west of the subsequent bridge sites. These bridges were was used to grant access to an area called The Terrace. This is where four huts were once located. Two huts were gone by the 1930s with Mackay Cottage gone by 1980 and Pearson / Scout Hut gone by 1995.
