The pipeline that replaced the Wainuiomata Water Race
The Wainuiomata Water Race and Coleman’s Tunnel, constructed between 1881 and 1882, were decommissioned in 1902 due to persistent and excessive water leakage. In response, a 30 inch (760 mm) cast-iron pipeline was laid from the original dam (Lower Dam) to the terminus of Coleman’s Tunnel, where it joined the existing 30 inch pipeline that carried water across the Wainuiomata Valley toward the city.
The new pipeline, built between 1899 and 1902, was a major upgrade, providing a sealed, pressurised system that significantly reduced water loss and improved flow. On 23 September 1902, water was first conveyed through the new pipe, marking the official end of the old water race and tunnel system. Much of this new pipeline was buried beneath or adjacent to what is now Reservoir Road.
