History & Naming

Homedale is the oldest part of Wainuiomata, so naming a road after the suburb likely indicated its importance. A road can be seen here in an old 1940 photo, but it only ran along the side of Wainuiomata Primary School, which is half the length of the street today. The school has a lot of history being established way back in 1857. The full road with some new houses can be seen in some photos in 1946, but an older photo taken in 1941 shows no full road or new houses.

The name “Homedale” suggests a combination of “home” and “dale” (meaning valley), perhaps reflecting the suburban growth and the valley landscape of Wainuiomata.

Homedale Reserve

It is used for recreational activities and Mervyn Dudley Johnson Memorial Garden. In the spring and autumn seasons, the trees provide a vibrant display in the reserve and along the street.
