Since 1912, a suspension bridge has spanned the Wainuiomata River near the Mackay Cottage site.
The present suspension bridge was built in 2022. Before this, an earlier suspension bridge was used next to the current location. Erected in the 1980s, it was demolished in late May, 2024. This bridge replaced a basic suspension bridge from 1912, which was approximately 100 meters west of the other two bridge sites. These bridges were was used to grant access to four huts. Two huts were gone by the 1930s with Mackay Cottage gone by 1980 and Pearson / Scout Hut gone by 1995.
