Since 1912, a suspension bridge has spanned the Wainuiomata River near the Mackay Cottage site.

The present suspension bridge was built in 2022. Before this, an earlier suspension bridge was used next to the current location. Erected in the 1980s, it still stands (as of 2023), albeit inaccessible to the public due to blockades. This bridge replaced a basic suspension bridge from 1912, which was used to grant access to 4 huts. By the 1930s to 1980, 2 huts remained. Today, no huts remain. This original bridge was approximately 100 meters west of the other two bridge sites.
