Top Pool as the name suggests, was once widely considered the best swimming hole.
Top Pool was long regarded as the finest natural swimming spot in Wainuiomata. However, the Wellington Regional Water Board became increasingly concerned about people swimming in close proximity to the water catchment area. As a result, several truckloads of gravel and stones were deposited into the pool to discourage further swimming.
Over time, floods have carried some of this material downstream, partially restoring the pool. Despite this improvement, it remains noticeably shallower than it once was, preventing swimmers from jumping in from the nearby bank as they did previously.
There are two main ways to reach Top Pool. From the Reservoir Road car park, a short track leads directly down to the Wainuiomata River and the pool. Alternatively, from the Hine Road car park, follow the track toward the Gums Loop Walk entrance. Rather than joining the loop walk, turn left and cross the bridge over the Wainuiomata River, which leads directly to the pool.
When you visit Top Pool, think about gathering a few rocks and placing them in the rock dam downstream. Over time, this action will aid in deepening the pool.
