John Coleman (1835–1908) was a notable contractor involved in the development of Wellington’s water supply infrastructure in the late 19th century. In September 1880, his tender of £283 10s 6d was accepted for constructing a tunnel for the Wainuiomata waterworks project. This brick-lined tunnel, now known as Black Creek Tunnel was developed to support water piping.
