Crash pilot not yet identified

The body of a man killed in a light plane crash near Wellington last month has still not been formally identified because the police have been unable to find vital dental records.

Sergeant Mike Hubbard, of the Wainuiomata police, said the body was believed to be that of Derek Allan Covell, aged 30, the pilot of a light plane which crashed in rugged hill country near Turakirae Heads on February 5.

Two other men also died in the crash. Mr Covell’s body era be formally identified through dental records, and in spite of intensive inquiries, the police cannot find any dentist who may have worked on his teeth. “We believe Mr Covell had not lived long in the Wellington area,” Sergeant Hubbard said. “But he used to work in Wanganui, and in the Gisborne area, where some of his relatives still live. “Somewhere in New Zealand there must be a dentist who had Mr Covell as a patient. We would be very pleased if the dentist would get in touch with us urgently.”
