Main Road was originally known as Wainuiomata Road because this area was the focal point of Wainuiomata.
History & Naming
Main Road, established in the late 19th century, was originally part of Wainuiomata Road, reflecting Homedale’s role as the focal point of early Wainuiomata. While Homedale remains the oldest part of the valley, it is now just one of several suburbs within Wainuiomata. This historical significance explains why the section of road from Wainuiomata Hill to the Fitzherbert Road roundabout still retains the name Wainuiomata Road, while the stretch extending south from the roundabout has been known as Main Road since 1958.
Main Road Key Route
From the roundabout, Main Road runs straight, crossing Black Creek Bridge and intersecting with Moohan Street. It then continues through the Village, where it meets Moores Valley Road. Further south, it crosses the Main Road Bridge, passes Wainuiomata Primary School, and intersects with Homedale Road. Main Road ultimately ends at the start of Coast Road, near the intersection with Hine Road and Burden Avenue.
