REPORTED DISCOVERY OF GOLD NEAR WELLINGTON.
The possibility of gold being found in a range dividing the Hutt and Wainui-o-mata Valleys appears again to be attracting attention.
A correspondent informs us that a man named Cooper, who is well known in the Southern Island as a successful gold prospector, applied for leave to prospect upon some private property at Wainui-o-mata, and that this being accorded, he went to work, returning after two days’ absence well pleased with the result of his prospect.
Our correspondent adds:— “He is of opinion that there is gold in the dividing range between the Hutt and Wainui-o-mata, and has brought back some stone, which he intends crushing. Last year there was a report that gold had been discovered in the same range.”
Our correspondent further suggests “that the Government or Chamber of Commerce should assist such men in developing the resources of the country.”
