The McKerrow Link Track is a shortcut track between the Whakanui and McKerrow tracks

The McKerrow Link Track (not to be confused with the McKerrow Ridge Track) is a baitline route connecting the Whakanui Track with the McKerrow Track. While the two main tracks already link further on, this route provides a useful shortcut, particularly if you intend to head west along the McKerrow or access the Kittyhawk crash site on the McKerrow Ridge.

There are some trade offs. Using the link track means bypassing the expansive views from the upper Whakanui Track. It is primarily a time saving route, though it has its own quiet appeal through dense bush. The track is not formally maintained and can be difficult to follow, but pink ribbons tied to branches at regular intervals help guide the way. It is easy to stray, but by keeping to the ridgeline or high ground, the route can usually be picked up again.

When entering from the Whakanui Track, the terrain provides useful orientation. Below the ridge to the east lies the Whakanui Track as it continues away, to the north is Skerretts Gully, and to the south, higher up the slope, is the McKerrow Track.
