Ultimate Pool Track leads to the deeper side of Wainuiomata River’s Ultimate Pool.
Ultimate Pool Track is a short walking track that branches south from the Gums Loop Walk in Wainuiomata. It provides access to the deeper side of the river at Ultimate Pool, where the water runs alongside a high bank that has long been used as a jumping spot. It can be dangerous here however as there are rocks in the water that you need to avoid.
The track should not be confused with the separate entrance to Ultimate Pool from Reservoir Road. While both routes lead to the same general swimming area, Ultimate Pool Track approaches the river from the Gums Loop Walk and reaches the opposite, deeper side of the pool.
The track itself is relatively short and is mainly used as an access route rather than as a walk in its own right. After leaving the Gums Loop Walk, it heads through the bush towards the river and emerges near the bank above the pool. From here there are views across the water and access to the part of the river traditionally favoured by stronger swimmers.
Ultimate Pool is one of several swimming holes along the Wainuiomata River and has been used by generations of local residents during the warmer months. Its deeper water and steep bank distinguish it from some of the shallower swimming areas nearby.
