Whare-o-Parāone (Browns Hut)

Whare O Parāone-Browns Hut, Gollans Valley - 1942

Whare-o-Parāone, also known as Brown’s Hut or the Scout Hut, was situated in the northern part of Gollans Valley, near Butterfly Creek. Dating from the 1920s, the hut was used by Scouts and formed part of a small collection of huts established in the valley for outdoor recreation. The name Whare-o-Parāone translates as “Brown’s Hut”.

This photograph, taken in 1942, shows a group of Scouts and their leaders gathered outside the hut, surrounded by native forest. The timber building, with its corrugated iron roof, provided a base for activities in the surrounding bush. The hut survived until 1963, when it was demolished. Its former site has since been reclaimed by vegetation, leaving little visible evidence of its existence.
