Housing In Gollans Valley Too Costly
The possible use of Gollans Valley, between Eastbourne and Wainuiomata, as a housing area has been suggested from time to time in recent years and now that there is a national stocktaking of possible housing land this area is again being investigated by the Government.
The county chairman (Mr. J. B. Yaldwyn) said today that the cost of developing the valley for housing would be expensive and not economically desirable, and that there was enough land not yet in use in the Wellington area to meet housing requirements for many years to come.
Roading, water supply, and sewerage cost too much for the small amount of housing the valley could accommodate. The usable area was very limited, as the lower end of the valley was swamp.
It was better to develop fully the areas that already had services, Mr. Yaldwyn added. Gollans Valley might be used some time in the distant future but at present it was well down the list.
