In 1943, a pilot attempted to take his Kittyhawk over McKerrow Ridge above Skerretts Gully, in the area now known as Sunny Grove. Near the crest, the aircraft was caught in a downdraft and driven into the hillside.
Following a detailed investigation over the past two weeks, the crash site has now been conclusively identified and verified. The location aligns with an eyewitness account from the 1960s and is further supported by the discovery of four aircraft fragments consistent with the wreckage. The site sits beside a tree stump believed to have been clipped by the aircraft at the moment of impact high on the ridge.
