A bronze memorial plaque commemorating seven people buried at Wainuiomata’s historic Sinclair Cemetery has been stolen.
The plaque was installed on a rock cairn unveiled on 24 March 1984, recording details of those buried at the site. Evidence suggests considerable force was used to prise it from the mortar, indicating a deliberate theft rather than vandalism.
Although the bronze has little scrap value, the plaque would be costly to replace due to its specially cast raised lettering.
The theft was reported to Police, and the Historical Society appealed for information that could lead to its recovery.
