Right now, the holly trees are emblazoned with red berries, giving the scene a distinctly Christmas feel. In the northern hemisphere, holly has long been associated with Christmas because its bright red berries appear during winter. In Wainuiomata, these trees are a familiar sight, especially around older properties and reserves, where they were often planted as boundary or shelter trees. Good examples can be seen around Sinclair Cemetery, Hine Road Recreation Area, and Whitcher Grove.
