Locating the surviving wheels from an aerial flying fox once used during the construction of the larger of the two dams in Reservoir Valley. The system ran along an overhead wire and carried a two-ton gravel hopper at speeds of up to 300 feet per minute, transporting material across the worksite.
These heavily weathered wheels may be the only remaining components of the original flying fox. Nearly 120 years old, they are a rare physical reminder of the engineering methods and equipment used during the early development of Reservoir Valley’s water-supply infrastructure.
