From Burdans Farm to Gollans Valley

We explored the former Burdans Farm shortly before its sale, enjoying the peaceful, sheep-free paddocks. Along the way, we discovered an old tractor that had slipped down Wry Hill, a disused hay barn and a secluded bivvy near Gollans Stream.

Heading further into Gollans Valley, we passed through regenerating native forest of beech, rātā and young rimu before reaching a public campsite and bridge near Butterfly Creek. We continued another kilometre upstream to the property’s northern boundary, then returned to the campsite.

Our return route climbed out of the valley onto the Korohiwa Track, following the southern ridgeline before descending a steep zigzag track towards Wellington’s eastern coastline. Emerging from the peaceful valley, the sudden noise of civilisation was a striking contrast to the tranquillity we had left behind.
