An interesting experiment in the science of heliographing was made by the signalling section of the Wellington Engineer Corps at the end of last week.
The corps established a terminal station at Martinborough at one end, and the Tinakori hills at the other, with a transmitting station at Puketaha hill, 2516 feet high, just beyond the Wainui reservoir, and succeeded in getting through the following message: —
“Palliser Bay. To the Officer Commanding Wellington District. Warships off coast. Deserter states due in Wellington daybreak tomorrow.”
Lieut. Gibbs was in command of the section, which was accompanied by Capt. T. W. M’Donald, A.A.G., and Staff Sergt.-Major Browning, Signalling Instructor.
The experiment is regarded as very successful from the instructional point of view.
