New Zealand Times 19 Apr 1899

By the death of Mrs John Cameron, which occurred at Gollan’s Valley on Monday morning, another of Wellington’s oldest settlers is removed from our midst.

Her husband, Mr John Cameron, arrived here as early as 1840 and was followed a few years later by the deceased. For about thirty-five years they had resided at Gollan’s Valley, a pretty spot on the other side of the harbour, where they acquired a large tract of land.

Mr John Cameron, senr., died some ten years ago, leaving a widow and six of a family. Mrs Cameron, whose death it is now our sad duty to record, was sixty years of age.

All the members of the family are still residents of the Wellington district, the four sons—Hugh, John, Charles and Allan—all being well-known to habitués of Day’s Bay and Muritai.

We understand that the terms of the will decree that the estate shall be cut up and sold.

The funeral will take place to-day and friends leaving town by the 2.30 train will be able to meet the cortege at the Hutt on its way to the Presbyterian Cemetery.
