View of the abandoned O-K Main Kinney Strainer Chamber in Wainuiomata Regional Park. The building was once part of the O-K pipeline carrying raw water from the Orongorongo catchment to Wellington. Inside the reinforced-concrete chamber, a rotating mesh strainer removed leaves, sediment and other debris before the water continued through the system.
The chamber became redundant when the Wainuiomata Water Treatment Plant opened in 1993. The original strainer is now displayed outside the Wainuiomata Water Museum, preserving an important piece of the valley’s water-supply history.
